De Sausmarez, Guernsey and the Imperial Contribution (1930)

Author(s): Havilland Walter de Sausmarez, Bart. (1861-1941)

Title: Guernsey and the Imperial Contribution

Remarks:

This book was published by Guernsey's Royal Court as an official account of the request of the UK government for a contribution from the Bailiwick to the costs of the First World War, made in 1923, and its sequel. The States appointed a committee under the chairmanship of de Sausmarez, Bailiff at the time. This committee produced two reports. The Privy Council itself constituted its own committee which visited Guernsey in October 1925. The States then offered to pay the British government the sum of £220,000, by way of a gift, which was accepted following a failure of related legislation in Parliament, probably because of Dominion objections. The work tells and documents that story, including its constitutional aspects. Edition(s): 1930 Provenance of this copy: St John Robilliard Collection
