Ewen & de Carteret, Fief of Sark (1969)
Author(s): Alfred Harry Ewen (1902-1989) Allan Roper de Carteret (1901-1973)
Title: The Fief of Sark
Remarks:
# Both authors were established authorities on the Bailiwick of Guernsey, Ewen writing about Alderney and the early history of Guernsey, de Carteret also being the author of The Story of Sark: the island where time stands still (London, 1956). This latter contains several extracts from official records, particularly in its twenty-seven appendices. Together Ewen and de Carteret wrote one other study, an article on the Guernsey Lily which appeared in the Société Guernesiaise Transactions, xix (1973). The Fief of Sark presents a reliable narrative history of that island, including focussing on the seigneurial families (from one of which Allan de Carteret descended) of the sixteenth century and later. It also usefully supplies pedigrees of the tenements into which the fief is divided and prints some constitutional documents.
