The Société d'histoire du droit et des institutions des pays de l'ouest de la France was founded by the Law Faculties of the universities of Poitiers, Rennes, and Caen, in 1951, to study the legal, administrative, economic, and social histories of Normandy, Brittany, and adjacent provinces. Comptes rendu of the society's biennial proceedings were published in the Revue historique de droit français et étranger. The society presently goes under the name of the "Société Jean-Yver - Société d'histoire du droit et des institutions des pays de l'ouest de la France" and is based at Caen University. This compte rendu reports, amongst others, papers given at Angers in 1964 by Lucien Musset on the Scandinavian invasions and the growth of towns; Helen Cam on the English common law; and Jean Yver on Gregorian reform of the 12th century.
