Ahier, The State of Criminal Law in Guernsey (1901)
Author(s): Philippe Ahier (b. 1849)
Title: The State of the Criminal Law in Guernsey: the Harris kidnapping case, or The State of the Criminal Law in Guernsey: a crying evil. A plea for truth, justice and liberty.
Introduction:
This pamphlet describes the case of an Englishman, Luwee Harris, who adopted a Guernsey boy, quite legally as he thought, and was convicted in the island of kidnapping, and imprisoned. Ahier took up his cause, drawing attention to several inadequacies in Guernsey's criminal law, including concerning habeas corpus. In 1901 he wrote the series of articles in the Jersey Express that forms the core of this work.
The Rev. Philip Ahier, born in Jersey, was vicar of Glaisdale, Yorkshire, from 1876 to 1897, in which latter year he was dismissed following a conviction for slander over the subject of the high church tendencies of certain publications. It is not known whether he pursued his vocation in Guernsey.
