The Société d'histoire du droit et des institutions des pays de l'ouest de la France was founded by the Law Faculties of the universities of Poitiers, Rennes, and Caen, in 1951, to study the legal, administrative, economic, and social histories of Normandy, Brittany, and adjacent provinces. Comptes rendu of the society's biennial proceedings were published in the Revue historique de droit français et étranger. The society presently goes under the name of the "Société Jean-Yver - Société d'histoire du droit et des institutions des pays de l'ouest de la France" and is based at Caen University. This compte rendu reports, amongst others, papers given at Anjoulême in 1976 by Lucien Musset on the burials of Norman rulers, Marjorie Chibnall on mercenaries in the 12th-century Norman army, John le Patourel on the archives of the Angevin Empire 1104-1204, and Louis le Jeune on the lack of the separation of powers in Sark.
