Introduction:

Génestal is noticed elsewhere on this website (see the entry for his Tenure en Bourgage: étude sur la propriété foncière dans les villes Normandes). The work presently treated, as its title suggests, was to be the first of several studies in Norman private law forming part of the second series – études - of the Bibliothèque d'Histoire du Droit Normand, of which it is volume three. Further études by Génestal were prevented by his death. La Tutelle remains a comprehensive work on the history of the guardianship of minors of relevance to the Island jurisdictions.
