Remarks:

Tardif was born in Houesville (Manche), the son of Adolphe Tardif (1824-90), in whose footsteps he was to follow both as a lawyer and historian. Ernest Tardif qualified as Archiviste paléographe in 1879, and later achieved a doctorate in law, working as an advocate. He was secretary of the Revue historique de droit français et étranger. Tardif memorably edited what remain the standard editions of the Coutumiers de Normandie.
