MacCulloch and Métivier, Jurisdiction over Alderney (1938)

Remarks:

This analysis, prepared by Guernsey Jurats in 1853 (MacCulloch later became Bailiff), followed the report of the Royal Commission of 1848 which revealed that at that date the relationship between the Alderney Court and Guernsey's Royal Court remained much the same as had in the later sixteenth century. In 1848 and 1850, Orders in Council rationalised affairs, granting to the Alderney Court a limited criminal jurisdiction, like that then exercised by Guernsey's Royal Court sitting as the Ordinary Court. MacCulloch and Métivier's report treats not only the subjects of its title but also the question of whether the States of Alderney might petition the Crown directly in legislative matters.
